This solution sounds to me like the best way to handle this issue https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/planner/not-receiving-planner-comments-in-outlook-inbox/m-p/396523/page/2

And a work-around is to use the auto-email that is generated for a comment, reply to that email with the people you want to receive notifications, and going forward they will receive notifications on the task. This isn't very intuitive but will do for the time being.

The comments on the this techCommunity thread https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/planner/not-receiving-planner-comments-in-outlook-inbox/m-p/1099190#M3131 really sum up the use case for better notifications in Planner. This should have been resolved over a year ago! What is happening and what are the barriers to implementing a proper notification scheme?

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for your patience! Since our last update, we’ve released a few features to address the feedback around notifications.

We’ve heard loud and clear that comment notification emails should go to only users who are relevant to a given task. Therefore, we’re excited to announce we’ve updated the integration between Planner and Groups so that users following the group associated to the Planner plan will no longer receive a group email in their personal inbox when comments are made for tasks they have never commented on before. Group emails notifications for all task comments in a plan are still sent to the group mailbox. We believe this behavior should ensure comment notification emails are scoped to a more relevant audience of those who have previously commented on the task instead of being sent to all members of the plan.

Additionally, we’ve added more context to the comment notifications…

I am echoing that these updates are sorely needed:
    1. Additional notification settings so you can choose how to receive your notifications (email, mobile push, etc.)
    2. The ability to follow a task or plan and receive notifications when they change
    3. Notifications when you are @mentioned in a task
    4. Notifications within Teams"

    And one additional one:
The assignee should always be notified!!!! What point is there to having an assignee if they are not notified of comments on their task???

The current setting that notifies the current user of their own comment is redundant, the current user really wants to let other people know which is why they are putting a comment on.

Look at issue tracking software for some good ideas of how to implement notifications in Planner.

Anyone who comments on a task assumes that assigne(s) will be notified. Why would someone other than the assigne comment on a task if no notification is sent? Planner has some good feature but the lack of clear notifications and the ability to mention users are very limiting.

There are many use cases for this - if I create a task but assign it to someone other than me, I want to be able to follow-up on it, and be notified when it is commented or closed.

Notifications (or lack of notifications!) on planner cause endless confusion for us - being able to mention a user would help tremendously. The assumption is always that other people see when a planner task is completed, but in reality it is a black hole: only the assignee is notified! This must be fixed.
