The ability to customize would be very helpful. In addition to the current 3 categories, we'd like to mark projects as out for approval, on hold, awaiting feedback, etc.

You can now choose up to 25 colored labels per task in Planner and Planner tasks in Tasks in Teams. More labels allows for greater flexibility when organizing tasks. Use labels to flag risks, signal delays, help fine tune task prioritization, clarify accountabilities, or categorize tasks around a theme spanning multiple buckets. Anything you can think of that requires color-coding and tagging tasks, labels can help.

More labels has been a top customer ask and we’re happy to make it available now to all organizations. Try it out in the mobile and web/desktop versions of Planner and Tasks in Teams.

Labels are used in different way to label different types of work
A dozen labels would probably do it
Customizing colors is nice but not that important
The current implementation of label appearance on task cards works well
