As an update, we’d like to pursue improvements to the checklist functionality in Planner, but don’t have any near-term plans.

Yes! I've been using Smartsheet for the last 4 years and now that I'm working for a business that is using Planner instead, I've taken a step back for useable functionality! So now I filter tasks by my name and still see tasks that I've completed my part for, but have no way of marking my particular input as complete! So it looks like I have a heap more work to do than I have and it's hard to see what I've completed individually as part of a 'parent' task that is led by someone else.
