Extortion on the Internet
I recently received an email from an unknown person in which he is extorting money from me through deception. I had read about it before, so I immediately knew it was a hoax. But I can't understand how he found me and why he wrote to me. Does anyone have any ideas?

Dude, this is just plain blackmail. There are several ways how he found out - this is a database of random people's accounts, a search through common acquaintances. I ran into the same thing this fall, when I was called all week by some idiots and blackmailed me, even had threats. To be honest, I was a little scared at the time, but I didn't pay or give them anything, because during one of the calls, my older brother picked up the phone and told these people to keep them away from us. After that, he explained to me that these are simple clowns who can do nothing and that they do not need to transfer or pay anything. He also demanded that I read about online extortion here https://www.minclaw.com/5-tips-combat-online-extortion-sextortion-blackmail/ and be prepared for such a situation.

The most terrible thing is that a person can not resist people who extort him because he is in a disadvantageous situation

I think most likely he found information about you on social networks, check your privacy settings.

He can get any info you have posted online, even through the financial institutions. All digital data is not secure, you have to live with it
