Reporting with Planner
Planner should provide a quick and easy way to report regularly. For example, a view of what was accomplished during a specific week would be helpful, so a date filter and a status filter may be needed. Additionally, a static snapshot would be helpful, for reporting to executives that require information push, so a way to group projects in addition to 'favorites' is needed, as well as a way to email a snapshot of the group dashboard.

We don’t have any major updates to share at this time – Export to excel is still our first step towards delivering better reporting capabilities in Planner. You can find updates and discussion on this suggestion here:

Thank you for your patience and feedback! If you have any other suggestions on how you’d like to utilize reporting functionality in Planner, please comment below!
Cheers,
The Planner Team

Apparently, the permission needed in the current API is Group.Read.All which is an Admin privilige!
(Can be set using Graph Explorer)I don't know the full implication of this, but it sounds very bad to delegate an Admin-permission to plain users just to make them able to use PowerBI with Planner :/

When looking around I noticed there actually is REST support for Planner through Graph (which works as Other - Web in PowerBI).
How ever, a plain user hasn't the permissions required when trying to connect through PowerBI (or Graph Explorer)So altough https://graph.microsoft.com/v1.0/me/planner and https://graph.microsoft.com/beta/me/planner is interesting I can't use it as is if I'm not an admin.
For further information on the subject, look at

There's a Power BI Reports Pack available for Office 365 Planner at Fluent Pro, why don't we have native support for Power BI in Planner?

I cannot agree more with this request. The reporting for Planner is so not ready for prime time.

The ability to setup a "reporting view" in the planner with simple Gantt chart/roadmap/timeline and overall status / red/yellow/ green - and then you could export it and either put in a powerpoint of to pdf.
I imagine if you had the feature with "subtasks" you could have your major milestones as parent tasks with the subtask beneath so you should be able to filter in your report view only the Milestone tasks and get the overall status of those and perhaps display latest comment on the milestone tasks. -

Reporting is crucial for managers and while what you have already there is a good start, it barely scratches the surface. See the options Jira has for reporting and try to match it as much as possible.

Fluent-Pro has an option to create a Power-BI report on Planner.

Agree with all the Power BI comments. I work in government and so we have to report regularly. I use Planner with policy and project teams - none of whom are PMO people so we end up manually preparing complex powerpoint slides for reporting. I had started taking screenshots of our buckets but there's just too much content. Wouldn't it be fabulous if we could just create a report from Planner - sucks the data available into a PowerBI dashboard and report. Oh, for something so simple for non-PMO, non-tech people... :)

We need the dashboarding capability in planner which can display the summary of all plans, their open tasks, status etc. Think about team leads and managers that need to manage multiple plans at the same time, they need an overview dashboard for all their plans and for each plan individually.

YES PLEASE - Reporting is so needed especially when needing to communicate to business about what tasks are completed and where things are up to without giving them access to the portal

It's baffling Power BI still can't connect to Planner, but has connectors with several other competing PM tools. This should have been a no-brainer to prioritize, as it adds value to the MS Team suite while incentivising license sales for two of their core products.

Hello - We would definitely like to have an option/way to generate report of all the plans/ planner that exists in an environment/tenant, similar to O365 groups.

Also agree on Power BI. Please provide a connector that exposes the entire dataset including comments, checklists, attachment references, labels, etc.

I would like to be able to see a report that may be filtered down to Year/Quarter/Month to narrow in on the here and now of project statuses. At present it is one big bucket.
Also having the ability to breakdown by owners and labels is insightful.
A canned report or build your own report would be great.
There is so much data being collected we need to be able to leverage it for reporting out to the team and management. Based on other programs out there current functionality is limited. -

Please have a look at how Dmitry Ivanov integrated time tracking and reporting to his awesome Portable Kanban application: https://dmitryivanov.net/
Hope this makes it way to Planner.

How do we send reports to upper management regarding the progress of our projects if Planner has no tool for such reporting?

We are using Microsoft Teams for projects, each project has a planner using for keeping the project on track. We need to report monthly on how all the projects are going. Ideally I would like to be able to use Power BI to pull together a dashboard that can show the status of each project - precentage of milestones/buckets completed, status of tasks, budget vs actual (outside of planner) - similar to the dashboard for an individual planner but being able to bring the planners we need toether in one place.

I would like to see Status Reporting that isn't so much an export of data but a way to generate a view that can be emailed or distributed via conversation thread. It would be organized by Buckets, Tasks, etc. And then include the details of the Task including the latest comments that the Task Owner or Creator added, which presumably would be an update on status for that Task.
