Create task by sending an email to the Plan
Currently, when a task is created in a "Plan" there is an associated group and group email address for that "Plan". If a user was to comment on a task, an email is sent to the group. Likewise if the recipient of that email replies to it, the comment appears in the task. Would it be possible to Send a new email to the "Plan" email address to create a task with the subject line of that email being the task name and the email's content being the description?

We’re in the process of finalizing designs for a Planner add-in for Outlook. From the add-in, users will be able to create tasks for Planner without having to leave their inbox. The email subject and body will autofill as the task title and description, respectively, and users will have the ability to set plan, bucket and assignees . We appreciate your feedback and patience and look forward to this first step in what we hope to be a greater integration with Outlook!

Cannot believe this isn't a thing yet. I'd have thought it was table stakes for any project management package.

Any update on this? It's a pitty that such a simple but crucial functionality is missing.

(facepalm) - "Outlook add-in"... really? I'm pretty sure that's not what people were asking for. MS as always acts as if there was nothing prior to they developments and reinvents the wheel each time.
I'd suggest to sign up for Asana or Trello and simply look around for half an hour.
Same by the way with Slack for Teams, where most obvious and seem to be standard things are missing... -

Is this basic functionality available yet?

Really need this ability. We have people in our office that are not that tech savvy and need a one click solution to create tasks from Outlook.

So official response is May 2018, year later and not even a statement?

It has taken so long to update I now think Microsoft are finding this too difficult to do and we will never see it. I suggest everybody goes onto Trello and Microsoft can then get rid of Planner.

You've been "looking forward" to this for a long time - any news yet?

Also echoing what Liam says below - the new integration of cloud services in Outlook via add-ins is awful, slow and bloated. The new OneNote for instance is dreadful and I want the old one back!

How's that finalisation going? I realise it's only been 16 months but we are losing the battle to keep people on 365, let alone Planner. These workflow improvements are about the only aspect that we can use as a vehicle to encourage user adoption away from Trello etc.

Need a way to mail to planner board to create tasks. we are used to using this feature in trello. proposed outlook add in does not look like a solution to me, whenever you do seem to get around to it!

Another request for this.
Outlook Addin isn't the answer.
Mail enabling a Plan with an email address is the answer. OR use a similar system to Asana which is to have a global email address x@mail.asana.com and the file it into a person's default plan (ie use the sender address to route mail, not the 'to' address).

Outlook add-in is not a solution to this issue. It's nice, but it's not even closely related.Try to find a cometing product that doesn't allow emails to create a task in their platform. There's a reason you won't find anything you'd want to use. It's what is needed and what users want. It's as simple as the title of the thread. Anything else, including Flow, is not a solution. If anyone reading this is confused by such a basic need, I hope you're not in a decision-making role on the Planner Product Team. We want to use Planner. Add the basic stuff. Please! Example: Our enterprise scheduling software detects an issue. It sends an email to a specific user account with the error message. That email needs to be able to create a task in planner so it can be checked by operational staff.

3 years since the first request, 1 year 2 months since last update, must be going for a record to produce something very useful. I wonder how quickly they would react if somebody charged them for wasting time copying pasting emails into a task?😡
