It would be good if we are able to create a subtask to an existing task.
Thank you for the feedback!
As an update, we’d like to pursue improvements to the checklist functionality in Planner, but don’t have any near-term plans.
If you’d like to vote on task dependencies/linking/referencing, please head over here: https://planner.uservoice.com/forums/330525/suggestions/13976094
We will keep you updated when there are any changes. Keep the votes coming and comments coming!

Would like to be able to copy a text list in notepad and create a checklist for each line.
Second option would be to import csv, xlsx or some type of file to import a checklist.
would like more than 25 items in a checklist.
For instance new hire task, "Setup Accounts". We have more than 25 items to check off for this task.
Subtasks are needed. Say you are trying to implement a feature in a product and that task involved 4-5 subtasks to consider that main task complete. In addition those sub tasks could be assigned to different team members with the project lead managing the main task.
I do not feel a checklist is sufficient.
With subtasks each subtask could have it's own assignee and timeframe.
Having multiple checklists for a task as a task may involve aspects from different areas.

Sometimes a task is large and is better tracked with many child tasks.
I would like Planner to be able to accommodate creating child tasks for a parent task whereby the parent task cannot be closed while child tasks remain unfinished.
It would also be good if the user interface for the child tasks was exactly like making an ordinary task (i.e. start and end date, assigning users, checklists, discussion) just with another element for parent and child tasks associated with the given task.
Subtasks should be able to have different people assigned to them, with the ability to have start/end dates (which should be able to use emails reminders).
Planner team any updates? The last update from the planner team was over 1.5 years ago.
Assigning Subtasks to different people would be helpful.
Our team would like to be able to assign specific check list items to a member and put due dates on each individual check item.
Due Dates on check list items would be great. Along with maybe a dependency from one task to the other.

I want to have the following:
- assign tasks to another task (subtasks)
- progress of tasks to percent. Eg. if i have a subtask that is 50% completet and another subtask that is 20% complete i want that the "mothertask" is then to 70% completed.
That would be nice. We can only work with planner in real projects if we have such a subtask feature.
We'd really like to see:
- ability to assign subtasks/checklist items to other members
- set due dates
- no limitation of characters (should be able at least to write a phrase or 3 to describe the subtask in more detail when needed)
Checklist should have their own due dates and assignees (using them more like mini-subtasks)
Just having something basic that mimics a work breakdown structure would be a great start - even 1 sublevel of assignable tasks under the main task would be helpful. My workaround is to make buckets of subtasks for each task but that's really messy. I can live without dependencies between tasks.
Just likeAsana, each subtask could be another instance of a main task, but parented to the main task. You could drill in to the sub tasks, and each one would look similar to a main task (potentially all the same functionality). Bread crumbs or hierarchy structure would be visible at the top/side to allow fast jumping and quick visual reference for current task location.
Give me Subtasks please, that I can assign to others. Don't replace simple checklists, but add this as another feature. Allow each subtask to be linked to items in the To-Do app. Right now, I'm doing this manually by: (1) Creating a separate bucket called Subtasks, and creating a link to each subtask in the parent, and a link to the parent in the subtask. (2) Where a recurring task needs a reminder, I'm creating a task in Outlook (Web) To-Do "Home", adding a link to the parent Planner task, and a link to the child To-Do task in back in Planner. This takes a long time, but it gives me a taste of the functionality I want.

Use case: when exporting to excel I'm hoping subtasks will allow a 'parent' categorical column and then sub-tasks being a 'child' categorical column -- if I want to turn that data into a dashboard it allows for greater drill down detailing on project based work.
With the current tagging feature it's really just allowing two layers of categories, a third would allow tagging to be more used for stakeholder or business groups.
Please add due dates, would be super helpful.
As some has already suggested here - i would like to see that we can assign "due date" and "assignee" to each subtask. Parent task then would be completed when all sub-tasks within it are completed. In a similiar manner as indented tasks are working in MS Project.
Would be helpful to add more of the Task-Level functionality to the individual steps. Due date, reminder, "assigned to", etc.
I'd like to use the task and checklist features to create a Kanban board. Each task would be a project and the checklist would be major milestones. I'd move the project cards across buckets to see the progress of my portfolio. I'd like the checklist to have due dates on them and I'd like to record date completed. I'd like to have percentage complete based on the number of checklist items complete. Lastly, I'd like to download all of this in Excel so that I can analyze the performance of my organization.
I would like to be able to add sub-bullets to the checklist tasks. So for example, you could have checklist items 1, 2, and 3, and item 2 could have two sub-bullets under it.
