It would be good if we are able to create a subtask to an existing task.
Thank you for the feedback!
As an update, we’d like to pursue improvements to the checklist functionality in Planner, but don’t have any near-term plans.
If you’d like to vote on task dependencies/linking/referencing, please head over here: https://planner.uservoice.com/forums/330525/suggestions/13976094
We will keep you updated when there are any changes. Keep the votes coming and comments coming!

We are looking for this capability to improve the usefulness of the tool.

Yes, must have subtask feature.
Dhaval Khatri commented
Mostly we have multiple users working on single task so this will be very helpful.
I like the idea of being able to assign the task to multiple people and then to attach those people to checklist items.
The checklist feature is good . Anot alternate feature could be that we should be able to multiple peogle to task and then tag them to checklist items

I would agree with the below comment... Doesnt seem like Planner will be able to meet my needs at this point, which is unfortunate. I really would like to move away from Sharepoint list Tasks into using Planner. Must have ability to add custom fields, so we can monitor pieces of information about a Task such as Branch, Department, etc. The current capabilities just won't work. Please improve this Microsoft. Seems like things are moving slowly with this project.
Between this issue, and a couple of other major missing components, it seems like Planner is not quite ready for prime time. It's too bad, because I was really excited about the possibility of using it.

It seems this suggestion is closely related to the task dependency suggestion.

If buckets could be within buckets, and you can assign responsibility to a bucket to an individual, I think you would achieve this as well.
Is Microsoft really working on this functionality? Seems the most voted is not even implemented.
Due date and assign members to tasks simple solve...

We are currently using Asana to record our project tasks, and this allows us to define sub-tasks, each of which can be assigned to a different person.
This has become invaluable to us, and not being able to do this in Planner is a real drawback.
One example: A change to a web page which requires a change to an API what provides data for the page. The page changes need to be made by one developer, the API changes by another, but both need to co-operate on the change and it makes sense to create this as a separate task, with sub-tasks that can be completed individually as well as commented on individually.

would be good to be able to assign subtask to different owner than primary task assignment
Planner has many great features but it is too flat. Allowing tasks to be assigned to multiple users and then checklist items being assigned to an individual would also solve this to some extent. I have a group of 11 using this. It's been suggested I set up multiple plans but then I can't view progress on one screen.
Would be great if each checklist within a task can be given a due date.
I would think that in Planner your subtasks would be the task list inside the task itself.

Can't this be solved by having Buckets within Buckets?

This is a key component of my task lists. For years I've been keeping my task lists in OneNote utilizing the task checkbox, and indenting sub-tasks with the tab key to create a task list hierarchy. I would love to have this feature in Planner.

I agree there should be a hierarchy. In our company one person MUST complete a task before the next can work on it.

We need this one!
