Provide the ability to create Plan templates with existing tasks that can then be used to create a new plan
Rather than having to create every plan from scratch it would be good if the system allowed for the creation of Templates with pre-existing tasks (like in Word/Excel). This would allow a new plan and its tasks to be created from a template saving a lot of time.
Thanks for your feedback on Copy plan!
We’re planning on pursuing the following improvements to copy plan:
1) Enable users to copy a plan within an existing group
2) Copy plan in Teams
Currently we are booked through November working on three BIG initiatives, but should have an update on scheduling soon after.
In the meantime, we’d love to hear how you’re currently using copy plan and any other improvements we should pursue.
Thanks again for your patience and feedback!
-The Planner Team
Hi Planner Team,
We are facing another challenge. Will it be possible to copy a default (template) plan across channels or groups (in either Teams and or Planner and or groups)?
Idea behind this is that a project lead can copy a default structure into his own project channel (as part of teams) and after this modify the plan to suite its project needs....?
looking forward to your thoughts.....
the ability to copy tasks between teams channels would be really useful. Planner is a great tool but this is a pretty major flaw considering the big push to using MS Teams.

Thanks for the update - at the moment use is limited, until we're able to copy plans as we have multiple schedules with the same milestones.
Using existing plans is great, but it does not create a new plan, even if you rename it. I created a template to select as "use an existing Plan"; but when I change the dates on the renamed plan, it changes the dates on all other plans. If this can be changed not to update the dates in the other plans, this would work perfectly as a template. As it stands, I cannot use this.
Mirror below comments. The Copy Plan within a Team Channel duplicates and LINKS the new plan to the old plan. That is not good.
Is there any update on when we have the ability to copy plans and/or create plan templates within the same group/team? We don't want a new O365 group created for every plan. Planner is nearly unusable for us in its current state.
Is there any update on the ability to create Template Card with the same substeps? We are trying to convince a group to stay within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem and not move to a 3rd party and this would go a long way in helping.
It's been THREE YEARS since this request was made. And it's still not done ?!
We're in the same boat as Jay (comment of Aug 13).
Planner is unusable in it's current form.
We need a proper way of copying plans, having re-usable lists, and *being able to edit comments*.
I've come to believe that a product that is so lagging should just be killed. It's clearly not getting any love (or development) at Microsoft. Either fix it or kill it.
I first evaluated Planner a year ago, and passed on it since it was lacking many basic features like plan templates. I have been evaluating it again, and was encouraged to see many improvements such as "copy plan".
However, I was disappointed to discover that I couldn't copy a plan within my MS Team. Instead it creates a new O365 Group. This is not intuitive, and actually seems backwards. We want our Team to have many re-usable plans, not our plans to have many teams/groups.
I really hope this will be addressed soon. The need for this feature is too high for my team to adopt planner otherwise.
It would also be awesome if the plan when copied could be attached to the Teams we want to. Currently when I copy a plan I do not get the chance or option to attach it to the Team I want. It just creates another Team. The same option that appears on creation should appear upon copying.

@Jay Kim, As far as what I can tell from the status of this request. Partially Complete implies they are working on it.

I'd say this is still half-assed. Well, it's still better than "no ***". But not able to make copying within an existing group is just doesn't make sense. I think I kind of understand what's holding you behind, and integration of ms teams group and planner is might be difficult job to do. But at least can you make it official that you are going to work on this feature?

The Option to copy a plan within an existing group, or create a plan from template to an existing group is imperative to integration with Teams and other Microsoft Products. Continually creating groups is clogging the global address book and does not allow for seamless integration.
We should be able to duplicate buckets within a plan. I want many buckets with the same tasks. I don't want a new group every time.
Hiya - when will the option to copy the Plan template occur in Teams so we are creating different groups. Thanks

Your new copy plan feature is NOT awesome. You are NOT copying. You are actually CREATING a new plan with existing tasks and a NEW group will be CREATED at the same time! There is no option for me to copy the plan within the same group which I think this is the basic of copying action. I don't want to have 100 of individual groups when I copy a plan for 100 times. Can Microsoft do more research or testing on the user experience's side before you implement new features? We are not your beta testers. We are business users. Thank you.
The ability to select which elements of a task copy over (labels, files, links, assignments etc.) would be extremely useful. As others have commented this functionality appears to be present in other similar products.
Thank you for giving us the possibility to copy plans. We absolutely need to be able to copy plans (plan templates) into exisiting groups/teams also.
We need the ability to copy plans within an existing Group, as well as the ability to pick and choose which elements get copied over. Asana gives you a checklist of whether you also want to copy over things link due dates, assignees, descriptions, subtasks. Planner gives you none of that control and it's a vital function of being able to copy a plan.
Being able to copy a plan to a different group, not just the same group, would be of great benefit to using planner within teams
